Coffee has always been one of my passions. Another is staying in Tagaytay as often as I can. Imagine my delight when I can do both at the same time! A cup of coffee (preferably with a good book) always tastes better in breezy Tagaytay than it does in any artificially cooled mall. What is more amazing is that Tagaytay offers a wide choice of coffee places to just chill. Here are a few of my favorites…
Starbucks. But of course! Starbucks has been a staple in the lifestyle of Filipinos ever since the international chain introduced frapuccinos. It actually elevated coffee from the usual morning drink of adults (read: lolos and lolas) to the beverage of choice for ALL age brackets. It is so popular that a number of enterprising artists have been doing good business selling bracelets with clay charms of the Starbucks frap. Aside from this cold drink, I also love the way the interiors are done. Very warm, cozy and inviting. Especially now that they carry current issues of magazines to read while enjoying a frap. Tagaytay has not just one, but two of these coffee shops. The first one, with views of Taal Lake, is smaller and boasts of a covered upper deck to enjoy the fresh air. The newer one, right beside the newly opened Robinson’s Supermarket, is roomier, with lots of sofas and armchairs. I’ve done a quick survey and majority of Starbucks loyalists insist that the coffee experience is more intense in a super comfy armchair or sofa. Which is why the newer Starbucks in Tagaytay is my current favorite. There’s always a sofa or armchair available, and it never gets too crowded or noisy to enjoy my coffee, work on my notebook, or have a bible study group meeting. If they have Wi-fi, I would probably be sleeping there.
Bag of Beans
. The charm of this coffee shop comes from being right in the middle of a luxuriant garden. From the gate with its bower of vines, you go down a long flight of stone steps to reach the quaint cafe done in a very Filipino style. Inside, with its wooden benches and lots of iron and glass lights, you can sip coffee while looking at the profusion of vines, trees, flowers, shrubs and ferns outside. It’s not your mind playing tricks on you – the garden looks like a rainforest. You’ll even hear birds chirping sweet lullabies. Just like any coffee house worth its weight in gold, Bag of Beans offers full meals, snacks and pastries to fill the stomach. You can even bring home their super popular meat pies and breads, all made fresh everyday. Their coffee is another product that flies off the shelves. Everything in this cafe is good.
Figaro
. This 100% Filipino-owned coffee shop supports the local coffee farm industry by using only local beans. This is the main reason why I’ve always loved Figaro. The coffee I grew up with, the kapeng barako, is alive and well in this coffee place. And everytime I enter, the scent of it hits me, along with fond memories of summer vacations with my lola. The Tagaytay shop becomes all the more special with the cool weather and fresh, crisp air. With interiors done in traditional masculine colors of brown and beige, Figaro is a quiet haven to unwind and savor a good cup of coffee/

Truly, Tagaytay and coffee blend together perfectly. One of my resolutions this year is to find more coffee shops in the area to add to my list. You can be sure you’ll be hearing more from me on this.
