Gerald Summers is one of the unsung heroes of furniture design and arts. He was born in 1899, the youngest of five children and grew up travelling all over the world in Tangiers, Morocco and Madrid. His father being a Presbyterian missionary enrolled him and his two brothers in a Christian institution -The Eltham College. He was eight, back then.

Summers’ study program included carpentry and he was excellent at it. He passed a preliminary examination in Cambridge later. Although there is no record of his exact grades, nobody ever bothers about it. His work in the field of furniture design is his report card. There are many writers who today talk about his works and his underrated status not doing justice to his true abilities.

He first was an apprentice at Ruston, Proctor and Co (Ltd) as an autodidact. He then fought in the army during the First World War and returned home to work as a labourer. He married Marjorie Amy Butcher who also became his business partner. When he was engaged, he decided to gift her something and made a dressing table and a wardrobe for her. What he made propelled his future career. His wife urged him to stand up on his own feet.

After months of saving and making ends meet, in 1929, he started his own firm with his wife who is now the co-founder of his company, called Makers of Simple Furniture. His company name well suited the nature of his products – Simple and handy, practical and modern. In 1933, P. Morton Shand -The editor of Architectural Review arranged for an exhibition at Fortnum and Mason’s department store in London to mainly show off the collections of Alvar Aalto, Summers’ designs were also present and needless to say, received many approving nods from people. This was a very positive thing to happen to his company and the business kicked off.

Today his Bent Plywood Armchair and High Backend Chair are two of his best recognized works. Only 120 such armchairs were made. His work was, by many, mistaken to be one of Alvar Aalto’s. However a close examination of it reveals that the plywood is made up of one distinct sheet, bent. It later came to be recognized as biomorphic and organic as this armchair is seamless, continuous and swept back.

His firm had to finally close when World War Two took place; plywood was strictly reserved for stringent uses as it was used a lot in the army. Obviously, the government of UK placed restraints on plywood import. The factory had to close in 1939. Summers never went back to designing furniture after that. He opened up a small factory that made ball bearings.

In the United Kingdom, Summers’ furniture is still appreciated by many architecture lovers and people mostly prefer his designs to the metallic ones that were used by his modernist contemporaries. Arguably, he is one of the best furniture makers who gave the world many of its impressive designs. Due to an illness, he passed away in 1967. But his ideas live on.

A Few Myths About Sofa Beds

Everyone has ideas about sofa beds. Based on the experience of generations of travel to relatives or apartment dwelling, most people think of trying to sleep with that nasty support bar bruising kidneys or of herniated discs caused by sofa beds and stairs. But from its humble beginnings as the darling of the 1950s ranch house rumpus rooms, the sofa bed has evolved quite a bit.

One misconception based in facts of the past is that sofa beds are difficult to convert from one function to another. This myth probably stems from the early days when the mattress, along with a metal frame folded and was stored in the base of the sofa. In those days, it took the strength of Hercules to lift those out of the base and extend the frame to its full bed length. Now, through improved devices and a move away from the hide-a-bed technology, sofa beds are easier to convert.

In the past, sofa beds earned their spot hidden from daily view in the guest room or den, away from the rest of the real furniture. Their very look screamed sofa bed with heavy chunky design lines and limited upholstery choices. Again, that has changed. Many furniture designers and manufactures have embraced the functionality of sofa beds and now have applied good design principles and expanded the range of materials used in the final product to add beauty to the more practical side.

Another myth based solidly in fact is the one that states that trying to sleep on sofa beds is uncomfortable. Early hide a beds had a metal support bar roughly in the center of the space between the edge of the sofa frame and the foot of the frame that supported the mattress. This bar was positioned so that it hit the average sized adult squarely in the back, making sleeping difficult. But as manufacturers have put more emphasis on design, designers have found clever ways around that problem and now, some sofa beds do not need the support bar, but rather have the necessary support integrated in other ways.

Another factor that contributed to the myth that sofa beds are not as comfortable as real beds is the mattress. Just as with that pesky support bar, modern alternatives dispel the myth that sofa beds are inferior. Some sofa beds offer now come with mattresses made of memory foam or other high quality bedding. Though one would be hard pressed to find any manufacturer that would claim that their sofa beds offer comfort equal to a modern mattress, but the sofa beds of today are a far cry from those of the early days.

Myth number four. Sofa beds are only suitable for guest rooms, dorm rooms or minute apartments. Once this was true, but with the advances that designers have added, count flexibility among them. Sofa beds are now available in a range of sizes. From an over-sized armchair that converts to a twin bed up to a sofa which folds out into a queen size bed there are sofa beds to fit into any decor and to add the option of additional bedding to most any home. Sofa beds no longer stand by themselves in any room. Many manufacturers offer buyers matching love seats and armchairs.

Again, from the past one would believe that sofa beds must be expensive. That does not necessarily hold up to the reality of what is available today. More than ever before, the cost of furniture varies widely. With many variations in the raw materials and quality of components used to construct furniture, a bit of shopping can yield good quality at reasonable price. Companies who specialize in sofa beds that use exotic woods and high end fabrics to construct the final products do exist and are thriving. However, simple versions with more low-key components are available as well.

So forget what you knew about sofa beds, many of the myths formerly held as truths are no longer true.

I am an armchair kind of gal, myself. I like the wallow-in-me comfort of my big over-stuffed armchair for reading a book or sharing text messages with my “BFF”. Still, with the revolution going on in the world of furnishings today, even classic armchair furniture design is not sacred. Many furniture designers are already working and playing with new ways to make the old stand-by even more comfortable and good looking and their doing it with space age technology.
While I admit that I remain skeptical about their being able to improve upon “my chair”, I do think that the talented designers who are undertaking this task now possess technology that might make this seemingly impossible task doable. Using computers to model the chair, they can use virtual test subjects and add knowledge of human anatomy as well as studies done on how we sit when reading or watching television. Putting all of this data together may allow modern designers to improve upon armchair furniture design that has remained untouched for generations. After all, until now, no one believed these chairs could be made any better.Will these high-tech changes enable designers to improve all armchairs? While many have high hopes for their success, I simply do not know. One thing I do know is that they won’t be improving mine. I’ve got it good and broken in to suit me perfectly. The only way I’d trade it for a new and improved model would be if mine disintegrated from being over loved. Still, I do hope they can make one at least as comfortable for the rest of you.
